New York Cardrooms and Poker Clubs

UPDATES:
8/8/05:
BREAKING NEWS!!!  It has been reported that Ace Point was robbed by three men on Friday night.  Information is sketchy at the moment, but it appears that a player returned with two accomplices and held up the club.  They took cash from the cage and jewelry/cash from players.  There is a discussion about the robbery in our forum here.

5/27/05:
We have been informed that two social gaming clubs here in NYC have been shut down: Playstation and NY Players Club.  Both clubs were raided by the NYPD, and players with ID were not detained.  Given the current concern as to the status of playing in private clubs, we suggest that players exercise common sense and play only where they are comfortable.  If you want to play online, see our recommendations here.

 4/10/05:
Due to the recent press attention given to area clubs, we suggest not playing at the clubs mentioned in the pressOnline poker may be a better alternative.

12/20/05:
Several of the surviving poker rooms have been raided in recent months, and we are now advising players to use caution when evaluating a place to play.

Our thoughts:  Nothing beats the experience of playing poker live against other players.  We love playing in casinos, but getting to the casinos can be tough.  For those of us in New York, there are many private social clubs that permit their members to play poker.  This can be a great option for those seeking live action.

But keep in mind, if you aren't comfortable playing poker live in a location you don't know or with people you don't know, we recommend playing online rather than at a pokerroom.  In many cases, there are fewer options of games/stakes at the local poker clubs, and many more strong players.  Keep in mind, the private clubs in New York also charge membership fees which can be higher than the costs of playing online.

While we enjoy playing in the New York card rooms from time to time, and would never dream of giving up the excitement of live game play, the clubs still do not offer the variety of choice that the online sites offer, the consistent action, sheer number of fish nor the ability to get up and easily change tables if you so choose.  *[June, 2005]: It is also not clear if there are legal consequences to playing in the private clubs in the city.

So long as you keep the above issues in mind, the clubs below offer regular poker action throughout the city, and are worthy of consideration.

AICC / All-In Club - (Also known as A.I.C.C. and All-In Card Club).  Located in midtown near Port Authority/Times Square and offers the usual assortment of baby NL games and tournaments.  Also offers 3/6 limit, which is hard to find in NYC for some reason.

The Country Club - New club in the Union Square area.  We are planning to visit soon, and from what we have heard, it is a really nice place.
